LOCATORS WELCOME, SELL US HERE AND NOW!

I think there are some things we need to talk about, you the locators, and us the vendors. So if you are out there reading this is your chance to sell us.

My dream locator would offer me this:
- $30 location charge for a triple-head machine. I doubt a triple-head is any more work to locate then a single or double head.
- I want two guarantee's. First I want you to guarantee that the machine will keep it's location for 5 weeks. This will give me time to go back in a month, check it, talk to management, and make sure everything is ok.
- Second I want a guarantee that my machine will make a minimum of $4 per head. I think this is very reasonable. A triple-head machine guarantee would have a $12 minimum for the first month. I'm only asking you to guarantee the first months income, I'll take my chances on the rest.
- I'm not really interested in giving you a list. I can give you some zip codes to look up, you know what to do from there.
- I don't mind putting a down payment on my locations. But I don't think I should have to pay it all up front. I can work on a pay as you go schedule too.

I don't think these requests are too much to ask. You specialize in locating candy vending machines. I think the guarantees I ask for are minimal. If you aren't providing long term, quality locations then there is no reason to do business in the first place.

Those are my personal ideas for what I want out of a locator. I know a lot of us on here want to expand strong and quick. Who doesn't want to grow strong and quick? But we don't want scammed either. AND, one thing we have is the power of word of mouth. Trust me if one locator get's on here and does a kick ass job, EVERYONE will know about it. I will probably talk about it for months, giving you lots of repeat business, from me, and from everyone else.

LOCATOR THAT I WANT, WHERE ARE YOU!?
I have a 5 machine contract up for grabs if you are willing to meet the above demands and that is just to test the water.

Hi this is Ann I own RJ Locating Services. We already offer a 45 day guarantee on any non performing locations, we don't have a limit on how much you make on that location. We only charge $25 per location on single, double and triple head machines. We never ask for a list we always ask for zips, but if a vendor has a list we will call off of that also. We also locate honor boxes. We do like when the vendor has a charity hooked up with their machines it makes it easier for us and the vendor does not have to negotiate with an owner on commision. If anyone is interested you can find us on The Vending Yellow Pages or e-mail us at RJ4698@aol.com

Rob,

DO IT YOURSELF. Im sorry rj locationg services, but locators are a scam. Rob, every vendor does it thereself. ASK. If you want to own your company, you must do it yourself. 45 day guarantee? Rob this man will not give a 45 day guarantee. You will loose most locations after two months. It will put a hole in your checking account, faster than you can say, LOCATORS ARE A SCAM. If you use them beware. STOP being "bull headed" and listen to me, a professional. I know what im talking about.

I have to agree with Seth on expenses and getting started on a good foundation. VendSmart is part of a joint venture between three locating companies with long track records and 0 litigation.

Like Seth, we have expenses and it takes a lot of hours and effort to run a legit locating business. Keep in mind that if someone charges you $30 per location and offers a warranty they are either purposely misleading you on a warranty they never intend to cover... OR, are naive about the long term costs of a warranty, a support center and paying the phone bill.

As a matter of fact most warranties are smoke and mirrors with little backing them. Yes, you can get a gumball cheap, but you can't expect to pay nothing and get a quality honest locator for nothing. Would you work for nothing?

Also, please watch out for guarantee's on non-performing locations. That's suicide from a business standpoint... And one final rambling - invest in the majority of your money in quality people to either train you to locate yourself or to help you do the job initially. Good people will cost you more than a gumball machine vs. the other way around.

Sorry I havn't responded sooner, I got a touch of some stomach virus. Doctor gave me a saline drip and some nausia medecine. Anyway, I'm feeling somewhat better but no locating today.

Kyle, It is nice to here what the locating services have to say. I know you think they are a scam but what I think you may not take into account is the time value of money.

Ann, It sounds like you have a great deal on locating. At $25 you really want me to give you guys a test run. As I was mentioning to Kyle about time value of money, I will say more here. Let's say it takes me 1 hour to find a location Kyle, and Ann charges me $25 for the same hour. But now let's say I can get a job for $40 an hour. My time value of money is $40 per hour in that instance, so I'm saving $15 per hour just by using Ann's services.

Kyle, how did you get into that PD break room? I want to get into those. Are there no restrictions from the county?

I will write more later it's getting to hard to keep looking at this screen.

Regards,
Rob

Rob,

You have to talk to the Cheif of Police, at least I did. Thay are very leaniet, but dont offer HIM money. Say it will go into a police fund, of HIS choice. He will say no, if you tell him you will give him money. I got lucky, he said he did not have time to fool with the money, I would give him, and told me to keep it ALL. So I have my First, non paying commission location, at a P.D. of all places. And thay all so said I could put one in the lobby too. So now I have 3 machines placed. Get Well Soon. And get back out there, as soon as you feel better, that is!

Rob,

How are you feeling today? Getting behind. But your sick. Thats an excuse. My new machine is getting here wed. and I paid for 2 single heads, and a place for them too. 6 machines so far. I am catching up, wait were tied! I am buying 3 more in a few weeks. All im doing the next two weeks is: servicing my PLACED machines, putting new machines togther, and taking them to there locations. It is a lot of work!

I am trying Bouncy Balls for the first time. It will be in the P.D. lobby. Lets cross our fingers. I will service it like every 5 months, and clean it every week! O well, it will be a slow earner.

GET WELL ROB!

Hi Rob,

Sorry that you are sick. Hopefully you are feeling better soon, as I am missing your daily blog entry!

Take care,

I'm not feeling too bad today. I may get out there tomorrow and start locating.

I'm going to try the new line

"Hi I'm Robert, I just graduated college and I started small candy vending route. I offer 30% commission and it helps the cancer children. Would you like to donate a square foot of your store?"

Or something like that, I like that one because it is personable.

Kyle, I don't know how the bouncy balls will do in the PD. Are there many kids there? I have read on the bouncy balls and hear that a lot of teenagers buy them as well. I'm pretty sure I can remember buying them at one time or another. Plus I know my little cousins love to buy them. I would say in the police department that M&M Peanuts will do the best.

When I go in to talk to the guy about putting in a rack at the restaurant I'm going to mention that I prefer a 6 month tentative agreement on keeping it on location. I'll say I don't require a contract but since it is a special order I do ask that he keep it there for at least 6 months.

Ryan, sorry I havn't blogged too much. I did want to give the locators a chance to respond on the top post as well. Hopefully I'll be back in the game tomorrow.

OH, one other thing. I have family in ohio/kentucky that I'm going to visit this summer for 2 weeks. You know I really want to buy 10 or 20 machines and have them sent there and locate them while I'm on vacation. Maybe bring my cousins along on the route to help me place them. I figure if I placed 20 machines and I serviced them every 3 months. At $20 a machine that's $400 a month or $1200 a 3 months so I could just fly out there, see family, service them, and head on back home? Anyway, just an idea.

Talk soon.

Regards,
Rob

Hi Rob,

What's going on this week? Feeling better?

I think your idea of placing machines in Kentucky/Ohio is an interesting idea, especially since you visit there four times a year. Even if the machines don't pay for your trip, at least they would off-set the cost of your trip. However, what if one of the machines breaks down? Are you going to rely on your cousins to fix it?

Eagerly awaiting an update,
Ryan

Robert Neil Patterson II said...

Sorry about not responding Ryan. I sort of missed your last comment there. Anyway, it's Friday and I'm feeling good.

It would be kind of odd having my cousins do it. But one of my cousin's father runs the local bank, and you know, everyone knows him and his family in town. It's a town of like 4000. That cousin is like 12 and would do anything I do basically so I figure he and his dad could go service / fix the machines if there were any problems. I could give him half of the profit I guess or something. I don't know, I havn't figured it all out yet. Just an idea.
