Today I decided I needed to check some machines. First of all I had 3 machines that I couldn't get into. The back door lock is stuck. I know what the problem is but I need to take those machines out for maintenance, does anyone have a good idea how to do this? I'm new to this.
The ones I did check:
Dry Cleaners : $5.50
Bar (Machine in hallway) : $9.25
I'm driving around depressed at this point. The first two locations were not good. I felt so lucky to have made $9.25 in the one location. Then I went to the next two.
Butchers: $3.75
Lunch Grill: $4
After these I was really down. What was going on in my mind: How in the hell did I let myself get into this damn business and think it would be so easy. $20 a month average, yeah right. Damn, now I have 46 machines making $5 a month. I'm running through numbers in my head. 100 machines at $5 a month only $500.
Prepare yourself for this vendors. This has got to be the worst feeling ever. Going around and doing all this work, building machines, finding locations, and then making $3-$4. God how aggravating and depressing.
So, I went to the pizza shop that Cynthia found for me. He said he didn't think there was room and he thought it was a table top machine. I talked to him for a few minutes and we found a corner in the restaurant for it. It fits, looks great, and I think it will do well. So the day wasn't as bad at this point. Had he of said no I may have looked for a bridge ; ) It really is an outstanding location. The machine fits in perfectly with gumballs and runts. I hope it does well, I think it will.
Finally, there was one last place to check by my house; a pizza shop.
Pizza Shop: $55!!!!!
Yes, that is $55 not $5.50. It has been on location for a month. So at this point I'm just all mixed up. $4 and $55. My mind wasn't ready for all of this. Anyway, Let's look at the averages so far. We will find the truth.
Location Money Thus Far:
Location 1: $35.50
Location 2: $55.00
Location 3: $15.75
Location 4: $30.00
Location 5: $9.25
Location 6: $5.50
Location 7: $3.75
Location 8: $4.00
AVERAGE: $19.85 per location. I hope this helps your calculations Alan. It is very interesting. I'm not sure if you all are familiar with the Pareto principle but it goes like this. 80% of your profits will come from 20% of your locations. The principle is universal. 80% of locations derive 20% of profits. 80% of candy in your machines generates 20% of your revenue; this would be true for the pizza shop, as most of the sales were gumballs.
The other nice thing is this. At locations where I'm only making $5 bucks a month I can throw in a single head. A single head sets me back about $55 and at $5 a month it will pay for itself in a year.
Rob
UPDATE: I called the 15 places that Cynthia gave me. One of them is a maybe. I'll be honest, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It was kind of torturous getting down the list though. I'm sure you get better the more you call. The reactions are generally good. I think because I have no accent and I'm friendly on the phone. It took me 10 minutes to call 15 places, I can see how locators can make good money even at 1 location an hour.

Well,
Do not panic yet. Now you have gotten to the point that you will relocate some of your slower spots to new locations, and you wont have to buy a new machine. Leave them there until you find a potential better spot and move it. You just will not buy new machines as often as you have in the past.
Ken
Ken, are you actually trying to get me to slow down??!! haha
I agree with you. I'm going to have to move some machines to better spots. I think the location that made $9.25 I may keep. I don't know. Also, I may try a new product mix. You never know if that will help as well.
I have 29 machines on location now. That in itself is exciting. I remember when I got my first location, seems so long ago. How are you and your son doing? Is that new break room working out? What do you think about joining Cynthia and I with out calling plan? Maybe your son could call around town!
Rob
Hi Robert
Thank you for sharing your numbers with me and others. I never thought it would be easy. If it was everyone would be doing it. I think you will soon have 100 machines out there. How is everything going with your locator?
One of the reasons that inter-changeable candy canisters appeals to me is that the business owners think they are getting fresh candy each month. Really they are just replaced from the last stop or location. There must be an industry standard on how long different products stay fresh or good.
I do not ever think that running a bubblegum route would be considered a " passive income ". It would be continuous work.
Alan
Hey Alan,
I don't know about the passivity of a candy route. Personally I think it is very much passive after you get things setup. To me a few hours a week of maintenance and money collection is passive.
About replacing candy every month:
With the double head machines I have now you can remove the entire candy globe and replace it wish a fresh one. You could just carry the fresh ones in your car with you. This is the same idea as the canister.
I just have this to say one last time. Once you get to placing double head machines like I have you will just know in your heart that they are better. They just look like they are going to make more money. You can see the candy from all around and they are sharp! I highly suggest them. If I were you I would drive down to Miami when I ordered my machines. I saved $1000 in shipping on 15 machines.
At $95 a machine 100 machines will only set you back $9500. That sure is a lot less than $30,000 with 1800vending!
Have I changed your mind from 1800vend yet?
My locator is doing great, thanks for asking. He called me today and told me there would be a few more locations for me on Monday! He also told me I'm the biggest pain in the ass customer he has ever had, I told him that was the best compliment I had ever received! j/k but I'm not easy on him. I always reiterate that I only want the best locations, haha. I'm very happy with the locations he has been giving me so far.
I think you guys will be happy with him too.
Rob
Rob,
Stop buying machines. You have some work to do. You will have to relocate a bunch of your machines. The butchers shop is not high traffic. Dry Cleaners? What to do? Try toys caps. Kids with quarters, setting there waiting. Thay see that ball of goop, or sticky hands, or even combo locks. O thay cant resist buying one!
You have to many low traffic locations. I held myself back from saying that. But now it fits!
Try relocating Monday!
Kyle G.
I need to locate first before I start relocating! But don't worry, I'm going to relocate the crap machines. What did you think about the pizza place making $55 ??
Rob
Very good.
I am going locating Monday. To over 90 places. I hope to get over 15 places out of these.
Kyle G.
Kyle, If I fly you down here will you locate with me for free? haha
15 in a day is crazy. Let me know how it goes.
Rob
Rob,
Lets just say I am a great locater. I can place 1 machine out of 5 places. So maybe more 20. I am a very good locater!
Kyle G.
Rob,
T
his is the comment that appeared on Steve's bolg. I will answer in it here.
"If the bag is going to last me a year why do I need to check the machine once a week? Realistically how often do I need to check the machine Guth!"
Read this! This will explain the weekly service.
The first basic idea that you must understand when operating your toy crane claw machine business is that these games must be thought of as vendors. Your customer must perceive that they are getting a item of value when playing your toy crane machines. All of this begins with the quality of the plush animals or other prizes you use in your crane machines. Plush toys need to be of sufficient size and quality to attract customers and encourage them to play. We have long found that larger toys that are rotated often encourage repeat play much better than small economy priced toys. Most of your customers will be adults, so your toys must appeal to them. Cute and different plush toys that you don't normally find in Walmart and other popular stores is what you are after. Those toys that make everyone say "ahhhhhhhh" really make the customer want to play games. You want a variety of color and styles to draw people and this means constantly changing the plush. Don't keep putting the same type of plush in your equipment.
Attracting new customers is easy but keeping repeat customers is harder. To keep your regular customers playing you must change up the plush on a consistent basis. Take advantage of all the holidays and use holiday plush. It really gets everyone excited about playing. Keep thinking ahead of what you will be using one and two months ahead. This requires ordering well in advance to be able to take advantage of the holidays. We place holiday plush out at least one and as much as two months ahead of the holiday. In long stretches between holidays try to find quality and different plush to place in your game. You can also change the look of the mix by rotating items out of the bottom and using previously unseen toys.
The next important thing you must do to make your customer perceive that they are getting value out of your game is to set it up so that they can win often enough. You can have the best plush toys in the world in your equipment, but if your customers do not win enough, the game will not be profitable. A win ratio of 30 to 35% in cost of toys dispensed to total revenue is perfect. This will give you the highest returns and profit. This can be easily figured by taking cost of toys dispensed (average cost of toys x number of toys replaced)divided by total revenue in. When customers see others winning, they can not resist playing it themselves. If you tighten your game up too much and no one wins enough, then everyone will find out and quit playing.
On this same note of allowing the customer to win enough, if you do not service and fill the game often enough, then when the plush level drops down to the point that customers can not reach or win often enough, then they will quit playing also. We have several games that we must service everyday or every other day in order to keep profits up to their maxiumum potiential. Keep them filled up all the time with quality plush and allow the customer to win between 30 and 35% and you will reap maximum profits.
This setting of the win ratio is done differently on different manufacturers of games, but most accomplish this by controlling the strength of the grabber. Consult your owners manual on this procedure. Just remember that you want to control winnings by this method and not by stuffing and compacting the plush into the bottom of the game. Keep them fluffed up, loose and as playable as possible and remember your game is a store front or vendor and must be attractive. Keep your plush mixes facing toward the front with those next to the sides facing toward the sides if you have side glasses visible. Try to keep the eyes of the animals facing towards the customer and arranged in a orderly fashion. Distibute colors all around the game. Avoid placing same color toys together.
Keeping your equipment clean and in good working order is also important. Clean the outside of the glass everytime you service your equipment and don't forget the inside occasionally. Keep coin entry ways and bill acceptors clear and working. If the bill acceptor quits working on a highly used game, revenues can suffer considerably. Keep spare parts available so that you can easily change out a bad component when necessary. Keep extra coils and string handy.
Follow these suggestions and you will reap huge profits in the arcade.
Kyle G.
Dude Please keep going. Im cheering you on. Like the cheerleaders and fans at a OSU football game. By the way I live in Columbus. Maybe you should reconsider changing from runts to something else. Never ever fall in love with your product. You may like runts but perhaps not everyone does. Its a business treat it like a business and you will feel better about it or get out of it and get out of it now. Also like how do you feel about say more controversial candy machine placement? I did see one in an adult bookstore once.
I urge you not to slow down. Get as many machines placed as possible. Just like you are doing....keep simple records. The first major step is getting the machines placed. I will soon get started in this area myself. Nothing ventured.....nothing gained.
Alan
Josh,
Do you do bulk? I agree with you about runts. I will warn him now, thay will not sell well. I will be darned if I am wrong about the runts! Josh do you read my vending blog? Here is the link
http://guthvending myvendingblog.blogspot.com/
Copy past that in your address box and enjoy my vending blog!
Or just click on Robs link to my blog.

Guth Vending Company
Kyle,
You can not make blanket statements about Runts not selling. There is always somewhere they are wanted. I have one location especially that they love runts. They spend quarter after quarter to see who can get the most bananas, because that is their favorite. Runts also last a lot longer than some candies. I would not put runts in every machine, but they have their place.
You may want to try buying some candy labels for your machines for advertising the product. People like to know they are buying a name brand product. This may help put more quaters in your machine. Check where where in the store they are located. You may want to change the location inside the store. Ask yourself these questions. Is it near the cash register ? Is the placement in a dark area in a corner where no one can find your machine or is it in a well lite area? Is it near a water foutain where people stop to geta drink? You decide. Rob How long has it been since you placed the lower earning machines? Did you give it a full month?
Dixie cups anyone? I remember someone saying somewhere on a newsgroup that just placing dixie cups on a candy machine increased the amount of vends per machine. I would like to do this this but the dixe cup company does not make the cup holders I need as far as i know. You know the one that use to stick to the bathroom wall. Any suggestions ?
Josh,
I will answer that for you...It had been over a month. I used to hound him about servicing his machines. I am sure it has definitely been a month!
Ken,
Once again, Thay do not work in most places. People tell me every where I place a machine, "O NO, I do not want thoes nasty things in my store."
I will not pay all that money for candy that will not sell for ME!
Kyle G.
Josh,
Tried that once. I wasted my money on all thoes cups doing that. Most people would use my cups for the watter fountain, or use it to spit there tobacco in!
Kyle G.
Nice to hear from you Josh, you have a business going yet? Yeah, I'm not slowing down, or trying not to. We will see how long I can keep this pace up. I think I'm going fairly quickly.
I use candy labels that say Runts or M&M Peanuts or whatever with a picture in the background. I just print them from my printer.
I was born in Columbus, Ohio. I lived in Murfield, maybe you know where that is.
Here's my take on Runts. They are not filling like M&M Peanuts. So when you are full from say lunch or dinner you may still grab some. They are relatively cheap and they last for a long time. Plus all the different colors and shapes are supposed to attract people? Who knows.
Rob
Rob,
Who knows about the color thing. Did you read my comment here. It explains the weekly fill up.
Yes, I read it. The pizza shop I'm in is the only place I can think that a crane would work. I don't know if there is enough room though. He may have to take out a table. Do you really think it's worth $1500 - $2000. Damn, that just sounds like a lot to me.
Rob
Rob I found it.Here is the vending location scripts you can use on the phone. Its just a sample of what to say over the phone. You can change it to suit your needs. Let me know how it goes.
COMMISON SALES SCRIPT
Hi can I speak to the general mangerPlease,(note if they ask who is on the phone just state your name)Hello Jim this is Rob from xyz vending company. We visited your location about 2 or 3 days ago.We would like to offer you a little extra monthly income for your business. We noticed that you had a little space over there by the side door that wasn't being used at the present time and I thought that you may want to make a couple of bucks out of it. We have a great candy machine that you and your customers would love. You and your staff do nothing we service the machine we keep it clean we keep it full and we share a percentage of the profits with you. Listen we have a great assortment of candy options. Most locations like yours prefer gumballs. Would gumballs be ok?
If they ask what is the percentage say well most of our locations would pay a 10% commisons we reallylike this location so wed be willing to offer 25%. Thenyou ask them would that work for you ? If they seem like there not sure Tell them lets do this lets try it out for a month and see how you like it for a month.
Damn, I hate to give out so much money! I can maybe go 20% commission. Thanks for the script. I think that will help.
Cynthia you ready for another round of telephone numbers to call?
Rob
Rob,
I have never given lower than %20. %25 is just enough. Many people mill not think that is a lot.
IDEA: Offer 20%. Say thay can have it, or you will give it to a local charity. This is a good idea!
Kyle G.

Charity Location Script

It wont cost you anything and somebody will come by and take care of it every month.Sounds good doesn't it. It would be great if you were to let us put the candy machine there.
Everyone,
NEW POST ON MY BLOG. Come on over and read!

Kyle Guth
Hi Robert
Two weeks ago today I " stormed " off my job at a Florida youth camp. I was only there for less than four months. It was a horrible place to work. I seem to have considerable time on my hands. At this time I would like to assist in your locator exchange program. If for no other reason that to learn something different. Nothing ventured.....nothing gained.
The first thing I would like to know about is the " no call " laws for the state of Florida. Your current locator should be up to date on the rules. I will be using my home phone and would just hate to be fined several thousand dollars. It would ruin my day.
The second thing is that it would take far to long for you to select and type a list of phone numbers. Try to figure out a way for you to send a list from " something " that is already published on line. I think that the membership and telephone listings in your local Chamber ( see link below ) would be an excellent list to start with. There are 90 restaurants with phone numbers listed.
If I phoned all the restaurants someone else might phone all the car dealerships listed. It is an easy way to keep track of who called and if the list is completed. It is a great idea.
I agree 100% with you. It would not bother me for one second if someone in Naples was rude to me on the phone. It would bother me if someone in Crestview was. It is just the way it is....human nature.
Please send me your phone script and the category ( chamber listing ) of phone numbers you would like for me to start phoning on Monday morning. A nice even number to see what happens is 100. Thanks for listening.
http://www.napleschamber.org/index.aspx
Alan L. Sampson
Alan,
Is is the scrip I use when I "in person" locate. I have morphed it to phone locating.
Hello, my name is Kyle. I am calling today locating small candy machines in businesses in this area. Our machines help benefit the National Children€™s Cancer Society. They help parents of children fighting cancer by providing financial and emotional support, paying for medications not covered by insurance and providing housing when treatments are far from home among many other things. The machine would have a sticker on the front and the percentage of the proceeds goes to benefit this charity. Our machines are very small (give brief dimensions such as height and base dimensions). The machine does not cost you any money. If you allow us to put the machine in your business, we will come out and clean, fill the machine, and maintain it once a month. If you need us before then, we will leave our number for you to call at anytime. Do you think we can try the machine?
Now I will tell you guys my regular script for "in person" locating.
Hello, my name is Kyle. I am here to today locating small machines like this one in businesses in this area (show them the picture of the machine). This machine helps benefit the Underprivileged Children of White County TN. (Show them an example of the sticker in your folder). This charity helps kids in devastating situations. They give food, clothing, and birthday, plus Christmas presents, among other things to these deserving children. All of our charity money stays in White County, unlike many other Charity's, whose money goes out of state. The machine would have the sticker on the front and the percentage of the proceeds goes to benefit this charity. The machine is very small (give brief dimensions such as height and base dimensions). The machine does not cost you any money. If you allow us to put the machine here, we will come out and clean, fill the machine, and maintain it once a month. If you need us before then, we will leave our number for you to call at anytime. Do you think we can try the machine?
Now I hope these scrips help you land good locations! I use these scrips on my route, and get a 1 out of 5 locations!
Kyle G.
Well, Kyle I just sent Alan a script that I edited and made just for him, but I like yours so damn much I might want to change mine. Yours are very personable. You tell them all about the charity, etc. I really like that. I'm going to show you the one I went Alan. Can you morph it to sound more like yours?
"Hi, Is the manager in? Hi, My name is Alan Sampson. I am a retired Sergeant from the US Army and I'm calling on behalf of BASE Camp Children's Cancer Foundation in South Florida. We provide a year-round base of support for children and families dealing with cancer. I was in your location a few days ago and there is a great spot for one of our gumball machines in the corner. We are not asking for any money we were just asking if you could donate a square foot of floor space for a small gumball machine that supports the kids. It is 100% free for you and we fill it up about once a month. Again, it's completely free for you and it supports the kids at BASE CAMP. We will be truly grateful if you allow us to put our machine in there."
Fix that one up for us Kyle.
Rob
I don't know. I sort of like it. It gives him authoritative power right off the bat. I like how you fixed it up though. Thanks.
What do you think Alan?
Rob
Rob,
Yes I can. You have to sound very professional.
"Hi, I need to speak with the location manager please....Hello, My name is Alan Sampson. I am a retired Sergeant from the US Army and I'm calling on behalf of Patterson Vending Company, along with the BASE Camp Children's Cancer Foundation in South Florida. BASE Camp helps parents of children fighting cancer by providing financial and emotional support, paying for medications not covered by insurance, and providing housing when treatments are far from home among many other things.
We are not calling for money we are just asking if you could donate 16" of floor space for a small gumball machine that supports the BASE Camp children.
It does not cost you any money plus we fill it up once every month. Again, it's completely free for you, it takes up very little of your floor space, and it supports the kids at BASE CAMP. I, and the kids at BASE Camp would be truly gratefully if you would allow us 16" of your floor space for a small gumball machine for your business."
Now you really do not need the part about him being in the army. Id intrudes into the statement you are trying to get across.
Kyle G.
Well, you deleted your first comment and changed it around.
Check out www.basecamp.org and click on their mission statement. We want it to be truthful I think.
Rob
Rob,
Ok I re-eddited it. It sounds better than the prevous one I posted. Re-Read it. I think you will like your script better on the 2ed one.
Kyle G.
OK, give me a few minutes. I will fix it.
Kyle G.
Rob,
How about this:
"Hi, I need to speak with the location manager please....Hello, My name is Alan Sampson. I am a retired Sergeant from the US Army and I'm calling on behalf of Patterson Vending Company, along with the BASE Camp Children's Cancer Foundation in South Florida. BASE Camp Provides a year-round base of support for children and families who are facing the challenge of living with cancer and other life-threatening hematological diseases.
How about that?
Kyle G.
I think it's great. Thanks a lot.
Any opinion Alan?
Rob
Alan said he's going to call 100 places on Monday so let's hope I get some great locations!
Rob,
You are welcome! Anything for a friend!
Kyle G.
Hi Robert
I do not know how hard you want to " charge the hill ". I edited the script so that it might open a few more doors. The way I have it written is more likely to get a...." well O.K....". The script is only a guideline. The actual telephone conversation must sound natural. The shorter the conversation the better.
Would you consider the slight changes in the script? You seem proud of how your new machines look. I would like to start calling on Monday morning. Would you be ready? Edit the below script if needed.
Alan
Script:
Hi, Is the manager in?....... Hi, My name is Alan Sampson. I am a retired Sergeant from the US Army and I'm calling on behalf of BASE Camp Children's Cancer Foundation in South Florida. We provide a year-round base of support for children and families dealing with cancer............( wait for reply )......the reason I am calling is.....
I was in your location a few days ago and there is a great spot for one of our gumball machines in the corner. We are not asking for any money we were just asking if you could donate a square foot of floor space for a small gumball machine that supports the kids. It is 100% free for you and we fill it up and service it about once a month.
Again, it's completely free for you and it supports the kids at BASE CAMP. We have someone in the immediate area and would like to show you how well they would look in your business. We will be truly grateful if you allow us to put our machine in there. Can our service rep show you the machine today? He is in your neighborhood now?.....
That script was premade but I edited it for you and made it sound a little better. I think it works. The more personable you are with people the more likely they are to let you do it. The charity's website is www.basecamp.org and I have documentation stating that I am working with them in my candy machine efforts.
My company name is Patterson Vending if they ask. Let me know if there is anything else you need.
Perfect, I love it. I think it's nice and it will get me in the door.
I'll be ready Monday if you are! Cynthia are you in too? What do you think of the new script?
Rob
Wow
That makes me a little nervous but then $55. I got 5 machines out there now just starting. I placed 2 out of 5 myself then about 50 calls and nothing. Rob, I have Chris getting me 5 locations next week we'll see how that goes. I am buying my machines really cheap. If I only spent the time I have invested in looking for great deals I probably could have placed a few. Anyway I work full time (12 hr schedule)and have 2 other online endeavors but I think this is the one!!
I did have a question for anyone who would like to offer some advice. I have a couple opportunities to buy established routs up here in Maine but how do you know how to value a route? Is it worth so much per machine? Are there any rules of thumb to follow?
Thanks, Frank
Hey Frank,
Glad you talked to Chris and he is working for you. Make sure he gives you the best locations. I tell him every day that I only want prime locations just to make sure it stays in his head, haha.
I would not pay more than 1X yearly NET. So if a machine makes $100 a year net then pay $100 for it. I think that is a good rule of thumb.
Make sure to go on the route and look at all of their machines. If they don't have spreadsheets offer the much less.
Rob
Rob and Alan,
I have been in this business for over 8 years. I would like to say one thing. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE MORE PROFESSIONAL. These scrips I have been reading are very UN-organized, and from a mind of a newbie.
The scrips I have been posting on here are from someone who has been a business man for over 8 years. I have the mind of someone you are trying to talk into putting a machines in there businesses. This scrip is one you need to use. It is very organized, and flows.
You do not want to sound like a UN-professional person. USE THIS SCRIP AND GET LOCATIONS!
"Hi, I need to speak with the location manager please....Hello, My name is Alan Sampson. I like your script Kyle. It's fine with me if that's what Alan uses.
I talked to a guy tonight who called me because he thought I was a locator. He found my name on the web somewhere. Anyway, I helped him out a bit and hooked him up with machine and location information. Guess the blogs getting around.

Rob,
Thats is wonderful about your blog. I do not think anyone is reading my blog. I am going to stop posting on it if comments do not start picking up. It takes so much time, and it goes to nothing if no one is going to read it! However, I will keep posting on yours!

I stuck to the basics with the phone script. I asked to speak to the manager. When the manager got on the phone I blurted out,
"Hi my name is Cynthia. I am calling to see if it would be ok to place a small gumball machine in your business. It's completely free for you and a portion of the proceeds go to help children fight cancer."
Short and sweet and to the point.
